Reuse of existing components after demolition of a prefabricated house contaminated with formaldehyde

Unfortunately, a large number of different pollutants were installed in buildings from the 1980s. This is especially true of prefabricated houses. Due to the possibility of prefabrication of individual building elements, conventional solid building materials were replaced with treated wood and artificially manufactured panel materials. The facades were clad with asbestos cement panels. Furthermore, this carcinogenic material found its use in waterproofing materials, flooring, adhesives and lightweight panels. Asbestos has been banned in Germany since 1993 and in the EU since 2005. Due to the installation of particle boards manufactured using a binder (synthetic resins based on urea, melamine, phenol-formaldehyde resins), significantly elevated indoor air concentrations of formaldehyde can be detected in indoor air even after several decades. Wood preservative-treated static wood components, wall paneling, and wood wainscoting can cause a variety of wood preservative agents such as PCP (pentachlorophenol), lindane, DTT, and permethrin to accumulate in indoor air or house dust. The list of potential contaminants in manufactured homes is long. Other typical ones are: Plasticizers, flame retardants, PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls), pyrethroids and PAH's (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). PAH's can be found in paints, sealants as well as adhesives for parquet flooring.
