Profile

IMKEWOELK + Partner is and architectural practice that brings together architecture and art, planning praxis and research.

“We regard the world as a force field between urbanization and nature, ecology and material, flexibility and individuality.”

Each of our projects is a nodal point of relationships that can be understood as a whole or in terms of its various dimensions: as idea, as art, as technical solution, as social field.

We therefore conceive large as well as small projects: urban development planning, utility studies, individual buildings, exhibition architecture, design objects, research projects, and publications.

Central to our work is a confrontation with open space – a much-discussed concept beginning with the essential buildings of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

“It is our conviction that the open space harbors tremendous potential – whether as an idea or as a design principle.”

Not as a neutral surface, but instead as an unfinished space that must be understood simultaneously as abstract idea and concrete materialization. This too is the legacy of the art of the 20th century. That is why we work and engage in experimentation within this important field of tension on new spatial strategies that are non-dogmatic and sensual, both open to the unexpected and to the other, multifaceted and well-suited to everyday life.

“The complexity and sustainability of our projects images from engagement with autonomous artistic activity, as well as through an approach to design that is technically and ecologically demanding.”
